INAUGURAL INTERNATIONAL AWARD OF RECOGNITION FOR ISTAC, IIUM

The International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) has been awarded the inaugural KARGOZAR INTERNATIONAL MERITORIOUS PUBLIC RELATIONS (PR) AWARD in recognition of its achievements in international Public Relations and Education.

The Award was presented by the Managing Director of the Kargozar Institute of Public Relations, Tehran cum President of the Iranian PR Specialists Association Tehran, Mr Mehdi Bagherian to the Rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia, Ybhg. Dato’ Sri Dr Syed Arabi Idid on 6 August, 2009 at the ISTAC Campus, Taman Duta, Kuala Lumpur. The simple but historic ceremony was witnessed by His Excellency Mahdi Khandaghabadi, Ambassador of the Republic of Iran to Malaysia, the Dean of ISTAC, Professor Dr. Ibrahim Zein, YBhg. Dato Hamdan Adnan President of Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM), professors of ISTAC and council members of IPRM.

The Kargozar PR Institute Tehran, is the oldest public relations institute of Iran and it has more than 1,000 members. About 30 members of the institute are in Malaysia for an educational visit and attending a seminar at ISTAC organized jointly with the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia. The seminar is entitled, "Public Relations Trends and the Global Economy." ISTAC, founded in 1987, is a research and postgraduate institution of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) offering master and doctoral degrees in Islamic civilization and Islamic Science. The aims and objectives of ISTAC are formulated to represent the hopes and wishes of the entire Muslim ummah. These aims and objectives are not new, but reflections of an existing reality. Since its establishment, ISTAC has provided a unique opportunity to study with Muslim scholars from all over the world.

Mr Mehdi congratulated ISTAC as an exemplary international educational institution which has opened its doors to students from all over the world to pursue their postgraduate education in a highly balanced and productive environment with peace and harmony among the students of all nationalities. ISTAC, he said, has been founded on the spirit to serve in God's name particularly in the field of education. This is one place where multicultural Public Relations is practiced and appreciated. He also expressed his hope that ISTAC will introduce a Public Relations course for its students. This, he emphasized, will help equip ISTAC’s graduates to be a more effective communicator thus making them more marketable.

Dato’Sri Syed Arabi Idid in his speech thanked Mr Mehdi and the Kargozar Institute of Public Relations for the International Recognition Award which is another milestone in the history of ISTAC. He dedicated the special Award to the pioneers of ISTAC, the excellent academic team and the students of ISTAC. Dato’ Sri Syed reminded that the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad S.A.W. demonstrated best PR practice in his times that should be emulated by all Muslims and non-Muslims alike. He also emphasized that Public Relations continues to play a significant role in bringing greater understanding to all parties in today's highly communicative and borderless world. The field of Public Relations thus remains a relevant field to be pursued, he said.

Around 50 participants were present at the seminar and speakers included the President of IPRM, Professor Dato' Hamdan Adnan, Professor Dr Muddathir Abdel Rahim from ISTAC and Professor Dr Kiranjit Kaur from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM). The delegates will also be visiting places of interest which include a local TV station, Lembaga Tabung Haji Malaysia, Ministry of Agriculture and University Sains Malaysia, Penang for a seminar on CSR.
